About me and do tutu
I created Do Tutu in 2014.
To be honest, I didn’t intend to start a business; I think it found and created me!
I had made dance costumes since 1987 for my children and a few others in various local dance schools. I even had a go at a full troupe of baby ballet tutus; that was a ‘Never again’ lesson learned! I was always a self-taught seamstress, but had designed and created wedding and prom dresses previously, for my family and friends so I wasnt fazed by complexity. But then lost my sewing motivation for a while.
In early 2014 I personally, had a really bad year and then lost my dad. I was in desperate need of some R&R and a bit of me time. A series of events fell into place at just the right time. My boss gave me back a week leave, and Aunty Pat gave me a cash gift. I booked onto the Tutus That Dance workshop, initially as a week away in a hotel with strangers, just sewing and learning new skills. I thought it might be a bit like ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’ but hopefully without the option to get voted out.
I met a great bunch of other mad tutu ladies and had a fabulous time with plenty of wine and gin. I realised that I had known all the sewing skills, but the course gave me the reasons behind the designs and how a professional ballet tutu should be created with a bit of business advice. That training built up my self-confidence again. I return each year for an annual refresher seminar, for continued professional development and hone my skills. It's also am ideal opportunity to catch up, buy loads of lush trims and drink copious amounts of gin.
Especially as that very first structured ballet I made was bought by a local dancer who went on to win double world Ballet championships wearing it. From then on customers found me and were knocking at the door! Although I stillworked fulltime and used evenings and weekends to grow my business, I soon found that I was turning work away as I didnt have the capacity to meet the demands. Who would have thought? I certainly didn't!
it was a very big and heartfelt decision to pack in the 'day job' as an NHS manager to concentrate on my tutu business. But it has given me a job I LOVE and loads of job satisfaction when the customers come to collect their bespoke tutus and and enjoy the delight on the parents faces when theirlittle princess or prince tries on their ballet costume.
So why is if called Do Tutu? I wanted a name that was short and easy to remember. My granddaughter Daisy always had the knickname 'Daisy Do' so I thought about Daisy Do tutus. however that name was similar to another business. As i specialise on only making ballet tutus and not all dance costumes, the name Do Tutu as its all I do seemed apt. My husband helped by converting the garden room into a studio for sewing and seeing customers. So I dont even need a shop or storefront as I can work from my home studio. My little place of sanctuary.
I have received such wonderful reviws from customers that the 'Do Tutu' brand name was gaining a higher resale value in the second hand market. So just to make sure it couldnt be counterfeighted or replicated, in 2017 I registered the Do Tutu brand.
