So, you want to order a tutu…

Not sure which tutu you want?   I have put together this guide to help you choose the style to suit.  I am happy to discuss styles and requirements along with design choices.

I have set a standard price for a basic style and a standard price for a fully decorated tutu. That way, it is up to you to choose what you need, at the price you want to pay. Don’t forget that a well-designed classical tutu is built to last and be worn for many years by possibly many people. They can be adjusted within reason and often have an excellent resale value.

Tutu Guide

Classical Structured Tutu

Built as a separate Bodice and Basque tutu skirt and can remain as separates if wished, but most choose to have it turned into a single item for ease of use.

The structured tutu is designed on professional standards for those who are serious about their ballet.  Designed to fit close to the body and support the correct positioning of the ballet dancer and allow freedom of movement which differs from fashion or burlesque corsets.

Structured balet tutus are designed to be adjusted to allow for growth. this may be by the simple task of realigning the bars at the back, or may be that the side seams may require adjustments to fit the  dancers changing bodice shape.  If in doubt, please contact me for advice.

English Classical Corset Tutu Bodice

The English Structured bodice is made up with between 8 – 14 panels which are to ensure an accurate and snug fit fastened with hook and bar closure.   The structured  English bodice is fitted to the waist with V point bodice and a matching fabric basque exposed.  This style accentuates the dancer’s waist and offers full freedom of movement.

Russian style long line Classical tutu owner:Grant Spencer history of costume design

Russian style long line classical tutu bodice

The long line bodice normally associated with the Russian style is made up of 10 – 16 panels to fit to the body shape.  The long line bodice has a hidden basque and sits on the high hip.

Either style bodice has front seam boning to allow movement for the ballet dancer.   The basic bodice has piping top and bottom with elastic shoulder straps. Extensively hand finished for a quality tutu.

Romantic Long line tutu

Romantic Long line tutu

The romantic tutu has a long line skirt attached to a panty and basque which is hidden under a fitted ‘V’ pointed corset.  The corset style can allow for sleeves or peasant style as a feature.

Stretch Tutu

The stretch tutu is based on similar lines to the classical fitted tutu but is constructed from softer stretch fabrics  such as lycra or velvet giving an overall ease of wearing which many younger dancers prefer.

Stretch Ballet Tutu style

Stretch Ballet Tutu style

The stretch tutu is built from double layer as a seamed fitted leotard showing the ‘V’ point front of a classical tutu but with the skirt attached directly to the leotard.

The stretch tutu is   suitable for younger dancers and those attending local festivals.  Dancers who are at a championship level of dance would ideally require a structured bodice.

The stretch tutu is made with on average, at least 2 years growing room. The downside is that it cannot be altered once made.  Many parents sell on the previous tutu and to pay for the upgraded tutu when required.
